The Redwood City Healthy Schools Coalition is a group of parents, teachers, students, and Redwood City School District staff who are working collaboratively to improve school meals in Redwood City.

Our mission is to ensure all children in our school district have access to healthy, wholesome, fresh cooked meals while at school.

Our vision is to make Redwood City School District a leader in school meals. We dream of creating a system that uses school meals to advance equity, models life-long healthy eating habits, relies on less processed meal options, and incorporates scratch-cooking into school meals.

We work hand-in-hand with district staff, the School Board, and the Superintendent to:

  • Increase the use of fresh ingredients in school entrees

  • Improve the quality of ingredients, fresh fruit and vegetables, and milk

  • Eliminate options that are high in sugar and/or not recommended for children in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans

  • Reducing food items made with pesticides. Organic foods, produced without the use of most synthetic pesticides, not only help build a healthier ecosystem, they can also reduce exposure to dietary pesticides. An organic diet can reduce pesticide loads in our bodies by up to 95%.

  • Reduce highly processed menu options for school meal entrees

  • Provide students with adequate time and space to eat meals and play during the lunch break

  • Use school meals as a way to teach students about life-long healthy dietary habits

  • Include students and parents/guardians in the selection of foods of good nutritional quality for school menus

  • Use school meals as a way to bridge cultural gaps
